Fire Bylaw to be Amended

Council Looking at an Amendment to the Fire Bylaw

The Village of Stirling is looking to allow backyard recreational fires by amending the Fire Bylaw No. 422-08.  Under the current Fire Bylaw all burning within the Village is prohibited.  Council passed first reading of the proposed Bylaw No. 459-15 on August 5, 2015.  The amendment would allow “backyard” fires within a fire pit or fire place with restrictions.  Some of the regulations are listed below:

  • the open flame must not exceed one metre in height and width so the fire embers, sparks or dense smoke do not endanger anyone or cause a nuisance to any neighbouring properties.
  • a fire pit must be situated at least 3 metres from any building, fence, wooden structure or other combustible material and must not be located under any trees or branches.
  • a fire pit must be set upon or built into the bare ground or a non-combustible material such as brick or stone.
  • all fires must be supervised at all times and owners must have a way to extinguish the fire.
  • fires are not allowed between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m.
  • recreational fires would be prohibited during a fire ban within the Village.
  • contraventions to the regulations or the Bylaw could result in fines as outlined in the Bylaw

*Only clean dry firewood can be burned.  Burning materials such as painted/treated lumber, yard waste, tires, plastic or other garbage are strictly prohibited.
