Council Looking at New Animal Control Bylaw

New Animal Control Bylaw Changes Lot Size for Livestock and the Possibility of Allowing Chickens in all Residential Zoning/Lot Sizes

The Village of Stirling is looking at new Animal Control Bylaw.  Bylaw No. 471-17 passed first reading at the May 17, 2017 Council meeting.  The Village is now looking for input on the proposed new Bylaw before they move to second reading.  Some of the proposed changes in the Bylaw include:

  • A new definition of the size of parcel for any livestock (including horses) within the Village.
  • Allowing for up to 8 poultry (chickens) on any property under one (1) acre and 25 poultry (chickens) on any property over one (1) acre.
  • Limits the maximum number of livestock and poultry on any property.
  • New fees for permits.

The current Animal Control Bylaw No. 363-96 was passed in 1996 and requires an update to some of the language to bring it line with the current Municipal Government Act (MGA).  The Animal Control Bylaw governs all animals within the Village excluding dogs and cats.  Dogs are governed under Bylaw No. 423-08 Dog Control Bylaw.
