Stirling Cenotaph
We are waiting to hear about our application to obtain a grant through Veterans Affairs Canada to support the installation of a cenotaph in our community. Council had previously voted to approve the remaining costs of the project to be covered by capital project funds if the grant is received. The Village’s public works team will also be assisting, if the grant is successful, with site preparation to further reduce expenses.
The monument would be installed adjacent to the municipal office to recognize the valiant men and women from Stirling who served in armed conflicts of the past. At present, we have names for those who served in World War I and World War II.
You can see the approximate location where the monument will likely be located in the renderings of the completed design of third street here.
You can review an initial rendering of what the monument itself could look like below:
We need your help! We want to make sure we haven’t missed anyone and that we are ready to go if the grant is approved.
- If you have a family member from the Stirling area that served in World War I or World War II, please have a look at the profiles in the attached extract from Stirling’s history book. Let us know of any spelling mistakes or any other errors or omissions: Roll of Honour Names and Bios
- If you have a family member on the list, we have had to make some adjustments to longer names to ensure all characters can fit on the monument. Have a look at the current inscriptions as they are planned and let the office know if there is a major error or unacceptable adjustment: Names for engraving
- If you have a family member from Stirling who served in the Korean War, Persian Gulf or any of Canada’s Peacekeeping efforts, we would also like to find out more for future additions to the monument.
- Lastly, if you are a veteran currently living in Stirling, we’d love to hear more about your story and have you be part of our Remembrance Day ceremony this year.
